When I started out as a brand newly registered midwife, I learned a lesson I still consider to be a white midwife's most valuable lesson:
Listen linda, listen...
As a white midwife in the national and global turmoil that is maternity care, I have come to realize that listening is love. Listening gives a person their dignity and humanity. Listening acknowledges another's lived experience as fact and truth. It is putting aside all my preconceived notions, my internal biases, my perceptions of the world, on hold and simply holding space for another.
So this blog is going to be a little different, because we'll be listening to the voices of those historically oppressed. I'm using this platform to amplify the voices of those who fight to be truly heard and listened to. It's going to be uncomfortable. It's going to challenge us. But I encourage you to stick around, to sit with me in the discomfort, and to embrace the suck that comes when we start challenging and expanding our worldviews, our theology, and everything we've ever known.
That's my expectations for this little blog. Thanks for joining me.
